The 4049U is a CMOS device with 6 inverters in the package.
Normally, each gate is used separately and all they do is simply invert the digital signal you feed them. Input 12V, and it will output 0V. Input OV, and it will output 12V.
We need an inverter in the circuit anyway, and that task was accomplished before with the 2N3904. Using a CMOS inverter I feel has certain advantages in this application:
  • It consumes nearly 0 current
  • It has a much cleaner squarer output waveform
  • it does not load the Hall device
  • it can deliver a nice current pulse to drive the power MOSFETs.
You will notice that I am using all 6 gates in parallel, through the 560 Ohm resistors. This will boost the drive capability to the MOSFET gate. MOSFETs are very easy to drive, because they require almost no current at the input, however, if you are trying to switch them quickly, they have a relatively large capacitance associated with the input, and that requires a lot of current to charge quickly.
The 4049U should do nicely for this application, and it works well in my simulations. The huge demand for current to charge the input capacitance of the MOSFET is only required for a very very short period of time, and therefore, the switching operation requires very little overall current. We are achieving similar benefits by using the power MOSFETs vs. the power BJTs to switch the coils.

One benefit to switching a MOSFET as quickly as possible is that it will dissipate less power because it spends less time in between the ON and OFF state.

When the drive battery was discharged, I swapped the drive battery with the charged battery and started the device.
